Jurmala
Latvia
Jurmala, 20 km from Riga, is the largest resort in the Baltic States. Since the 19th century it has provided recreation and relaxation for large numbers of people thanks to its seemingly endless white sandy beaches, pine forests and elegant buildings. From its inception, Jurmala has been closely linked with health and wellbeing thanks to the mild climate, sea, fresh air, curative mud and mineral waters. Today, modern spa hotels continue the tradition.
The streets on summer evenings are full of people milling around the restaurants and cafes after a full day on the beach, but even in winter Jurmala is popular for walkers.
During the summer, the beach is equipped with various facilities including changing rooms, benches, playgrounds, beach volleyball and football pitches, pedal boats for rent and refreshment tents. The sea is quite shallow near the coast and safe for children. For those who want more excitement there is Livu Aquapark, the largest indoor water park in Northern Europe (www.akvaparks.lv). For nature lovers there is Kemeri National Park to explore and Ragakapa dunes.
