Kristjan Raud House Museum

Estonia

The main exposition in Kristjan Raud House Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the artist. The living-room and the studio, together with all his things and tools, have been restored in their original appearance. On the ground floor biographical photos, letters and documents are being displayed. On the upper floor of the museum, small personal exhibitions of Estonian artists are arranged.

Kristjan Raud (1865-1943) belongs to the older epoch-making generation of the Estonian artists. More than half a century in the history of Estonian art and culture is connected with the creative and pedagogical work of Kristjan Raud, as well as with his activities concerning the preservation of our cultural heritage. He was a founder member of the Estonian Museum Association, and also one of the founders of the Art Museum of Estonia in 1919. His work, characterized by the spirit of national romanticism, mysticism and symbolism, can be compared with that of such Scandinavian artists as Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Gerhard Munthe at the end of the last century. Most of Kristjan Raud's works are pencil or charcoal drawings. He was the first to depict strange mythological creatures, ghosts and devils, as well as personified elements of nature, stories of flying lakes in the fairy world on his drawings. As in the Estonian folklore heritage in general, light and playful tones are rather rare in Kristjan Raud's drawings.

NB! The museum is closed in July.
